The Department of Communication and Media at the State University of New York at Oneonta invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Media Technology. The successful candidate should be an experienced, self-motivated, creative audio-video producer or engineer with a passion for training future generations of media-makers. This individual will oversee the Department's technical operations and install, integrate, maintain, and repair the Department's varied audio-video equipment, studios, and classrooms, plus manage a team of student workers. This role requires strong technical knowledge and expertise along with excellent people and project management skills, budgeting capabilities, and a healthy mix of problem-solving, patience, and creativity.

The Department of Communication and Media houses a community of thriving teachers, scholars, artists, and practitioners across the fields of Communication Studies and Media Studies, bringing 21st-century approaches to the study of communication to SUNY Oneonta. The Department offers two programs - Communication Studies and Media Studies - with over 400 majors, 18 full-time faculty, and 14 part-time faculty members. The Department houses multiple media production and post-production facilities including a television/video production facility with two studio spaces and a control room, two audio production suites, a non-linear editing suite with a dozen workstations, a newsroom lab space, and multiple equipment storage and prop rooms. Students in the Department gain professional level media-making skills in filmmaking and digital video production, multi-camera television broadcasting, audio storytelling for radio and podcast, print and multimedia journalism, screenwriting, livestreaming, and social media and online content creation.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Managing the installation, maintenance, upkeep, and repair of the Department's media technology and facilities
Providing supervision and engineering support to all users of the Department's media equipment and production spaces
Managing scheduling of the studios and other Department production/post-production spaces, plus train and evaluate users of these spaces to ensure that all resources are being utilized correctly
Supervising the equipment room and student equipment loan program, including managing undergraduate student workers, operating the online reservation system, and ensuring inventory control and the proper handling of the Department's production equipment
Regularly conducting training demonstrations for media production classes and, as needed, running personal training sessions for student workers, undergraduate teaching assistants, and student clubs
Coordinating with Information Technology Services (ITS) to ensure all computers are operating optimally, specialized software is installed and updated, peripheral components are supported, etc.
In collaboration with Department faculty and staff, advising and assisting with media technology-related budgetary planning and purchasing, including writing grants and managing the acquisition, installation, inventorying, and onboarding of new equipment
Assisting with the production and livestreaming of 5-6 campus events per academic year (athletics, graduation, et al).

This position requires work to be performed in-person, on-site, at a designated campus work location, and may require response to technical emergencies outside of regularly scheduled business hours.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree
Demonstrated expertise working with and troubleshooting a broad range of current media production equipment
Significant experience working in a multicamera TV studio environment
Project management experience, including 1+ years working in a supervisory position managing technical staff and evaluating the work of others
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Ability to lift 50+ pounds and carry equipment short distances

Preferred Qualifications:

5+ years professional experience working in film/video production, multimedia broadcasting, and/or digital media production, either in a studio or location setting
Experience managing media production facilities, either in a professional media industries or higher education environment
Demonstrated ability to work patiently and diligently with college undergraduate students and/or mentoring interns or trainees in a professional media production environment
Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) certification and/or professional training via a certificate, certification, and/or masterclass in any area of audio-video production and post-production (e.g. Adobe Certified Professional, ASC Master Class, ARRI Certified Course)
Experience with equipment scheduling and management software
Experience livestreaming online audio-video for events (sports, concerts, etc.)
Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to media production environments
Ability to mentor student media clubs (e.g. WireTV) and/or a desire to teach courses in multicamera studio production, video production, or radio/podcast production for extra service pay
