Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor provides leadership, training, scheduling, and supervision of Pharmacy Technicians, and students functioning as Pharmacy Technicians. This position may be assigned to any location where pharmacy technicians function, including inpatient, outpatient/ambulatory, infusion, and specialty settings. Specific duties vary by assigned site.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Direct, train, and supervise Pharmacy Technicians, and students functioning as Pharmacy Technicians across assigned inpatient, outpatient/ambulatory, infusion, and specialty settings.
  • Develop and maintain technician schedules and timekeeping to ensure safe, accurate, and timely medication distribution, sterile and non-sterile compounding, automation, and dispensing ensuring adequate coverage across assigned sites. Adjust for census, volume, and acuity. Perform technician duties during high volume or staffing shortages
  • Identify backlogs, make real-time staffing adjustments to meet service needs, and achieve turnaround-time goals for workload and throughput.
  • Evaluate technician performance and coordinate coaching, feedback, and corrective action in partnership with Pharmacy Leadership and Human
  • Resources; participate in interviewing, hiring, and onboarding.
  • Identify training and development needs and coordinate competency assessments, cross-training, orientation, and continuing education.
  • Resolve highly complex daily operational, staffing, and medication-related issues
  • Oversee compounding of sterile and hazardous preparations in accordance with USP <797> and <800> standards, where applicable to the assigned site.
  • Oversee controlled-substance handling, distribution, and reconciliation, ensure proper documentation, secure chain of custody, and timely investigation and reporting of discrepancies.
  • Supervise operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automated dispensing cabinets, packaging systems, and related pharmacy technology; in outpatient settings, oversees prescription intake, insurance adjudication, and prior-authorization support.
  • Support medication inventory management, including procurement, receiving, stocking, expiration monitoring, and returns; where the site participates in the 340B Drug Pricing Program, supports compliant technician workflows in coordination with 340B program staff.
  • Enforce departmental policies and applicable federal and state regulatory standards, and maintains documentation required by the State Board of Pharmacy, the health system, and accrediting organizations, including licensure/certification and competency records.
  • Ensure audit, accreditation, and inspection readiness (e.g., DNV, Board of Pharmacy, DEA), and participate in quality-improvement and medication-safety activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • 1 year of pharmacy technician experience.

PREFERRED:

  • Associate's degree.
  • Two or more years of experience in a hospital or health-system pharmacy.
  • Prior lead or supervisory experience in a pharmacy setting.
  • Experience across both inpatient and outpatient/ambulatory pharmacy operations.
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy operations, medication distribution, inventory management, and applicable federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with pharmacy information systems, automated dispensing systems, IV workflow technology, and Epic or similar systems.
  • Sterile compounding (USP <797>) and/or hazardous drug handling (USP <800>) experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Current national Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT) through PTCB or NHA
    NYS Pharmacy technician registration

PREFERRED:

  • Completion of an ASHP/ACPE-accredited pharmacy technician training program
